What is tea?

Tea is a versatile plant. There are many different types of tea but all come from the same plant. In fact, whether black, green or white, the difference lies in the way the leaves are processed and harvested. Tea can only be produced in certain regions of the world where the climate and soil conditions are ideal. These tea regions are China, Japan, Sri Lanka, India, Kenya and Taiwan with each region having a tea speciality such as Green Tea in Japan.

History of Tea

There are many stories, myths, legends about the origin of tea and how it was discovered. The most popular story comes from a Chinese legend. According to this story, tea was first discovered by the Chinese Emperor and Healer, Shen Nung, about 2737 B.C. when a leaf from the wild camellia sinensis plant fell into boiling water. As he was pondering about life, he drank from the bowl and when he looked down, he noticed that the water had started to change color. He took a sip of the brew and was pleasantly surprised by its flavor and its restorative properties. The tea bags was invented in the early 20th century by accident again.
